Ghouta: A City Being Exterminated Aren’t we able to stand by them?

Does not Allah help the servant as long as he helps his brother?

Does not the Prophet (PBUH) say: “The one who sleeps with a full stomach knowing that his neighbour is hungry doesn't believe in me.”

So which faith we will bring forth to Allah (SWT) if we do not succeed in this predicament?

Is not Ghouta the camp of the Muslims (Fistat al-Muslemin), praised by the Prophet (PBUH): “The camp of the Muslims will be in Ghouta on the day of al-malhama (the massacre), besides the city of Damascus, which is among the best towns of Ash Shaam".

Our support is not because they are hungry; for they have a Lord who will feed them as He did to Maryam (PBUH).

Also, our support is not because they fear (death); for they have a Lord who will reassure them as He did to the Prophet (PBUH) and his companion in the cave.

We support them to excuse ourselves before Allah who will blame us for what we squandered and wasted. The Prophet (PBUH) says, "Verily, Allah, the Exalted, and Glorious will say on the Day of Resurrection: 'O son of Adam, I was ill but you did not visit Me.' He would say: 'O my Lord, how could I visit you and You are the Lord of the worlds?' Thereupon He would say: 'Did you not know that such and such a slave of Mine was ill but you did not visit him? Did you not realize that if you had visited him (you would have known that I was aware of your visit to him, for which I would reward you) you would have found Me with him?”

A five-year siege in Eastern Ghouta have restricted 400,000 civilians’ freedom to move, enter, or exit their cities. The siege have restricted entry of food supplies and basic needs and given way to warlords and local traders to enforce extortion prices on residents, adding to the financial burden of breadwinners who hardly survive dire conditions, unemployment, and lack of livelihood opportunities.

Today, Eastern Ghouta witnesses the most intense bombing campaign since 2011; the heavy assault uses all forms of weapons, including the internationally prohibited chemical ammunitions. The crisis is beyond description and the humanitarian situation of those unarmed residents is worse than ever.

Between 14/11/2017 and 20/02/2018, reporters have documented 1,714 aerial strike, more than 11,825 artillery shells, 1,935 ground-to-ground rockets, 47 cluster missiles, 24 TNT hose cannons, 15 chloride bombs, and 14 Napalm rockets.

Yesterday, pro-government air force have launched 137 aerial attacks on Eastern Ghouta cities and villages, throwing 44 fire barrels and ground-to-ground rockets, in addition to the internationally prohibited cluster missiles. In 3 months, the Syrian Network for Human Rights has documented no less than 40 massacres of unarmed civilians.

The shelling did not spare a young child or an elder. Survivors sleep on the sounds of aircraft rockets and bombs falling from the sky. Closing their eyes after hours of bearing the sounds of destruction and whining of wounded victims, they hope that what is going on could eventually become a foregone nightmare. But the footage of children torn to pieces as they stick in their parents’ arms leave them to despair, they can neither rescue the children nor give them an honorable life.

Living in a ‘hell’; the number of killed and wounded victims increases everyday. Victims became mere numbers added and counted with little regard to their life stories, dreams and ambitions. The recent assault hunted 1,488 residents, including 185 children, 109 women, 7 Civil Defense calibers, and 10 medical practitioners.

A report by the “Syrian Observatory of Human Rights” (SOHR) said that the number of victims is expected to increase; many are critically wounded and injured. Yesterday only, 450 wounded fell down after the intensive bombing raids, while tens are lost under the rubble.

As bombs fall down on homes, ambulance cars and Civil Defense workers rush to dig through the rubble and take the injured to hospitals. But the wrongful attack did not spare the later; five hospitals, including the Saqba Hospital, the Hazza Hospital, and Al Marj Hospital, were put completely out of service after heavy bombardment.

Amidst dire humanitarian and financial conditions and a lack of livelihood essentials– water, food, and warmth–, observers documented no less than 108 attacks on vital facilities, shops, markets, and civil centres. Among the affected were 28 mosques, 10 medical facilities, 11 schools, and 32 local markets.

The only bakery in ‘Mesraba’ did not survive the attacks, and a large warehouse containing free-distribution medicines was also destroyed. The desperate population can hardly defend itself with little food to stop severe hunger.

In response, the besieged residents resorted to underground shelters that lack minimal hygiene facilities. Hundreds of families lay on the ground suffering from cold weather and severe hunger.

Shall anyone respond to children’s whining and widows’ screams?
