Agriculture is a leading sector in the Syrian economy, employing over 46% of the Syrian workforce and contributing 17% of the gross national product. The five-year long civil conflict has destroyed the agricultural infrastructure and devastated the state-centralized system that used to provide seeds to farmers and buy their produce. As alimentary aids gradually decrease, Syrian farmers started to re-cultivate the safer northern lands to satisfy some of the mounting demand on food products. Potato and wheat headed food priorities.
To support Syrian farmers grow potato, Beyaz Eller undertook a project to rent 12 hectare of agricultural land and supply farmers with seeds, fertilizers, irrigation water and pesticides. Also, the Institution provided expert agricultural advice and marketed the produce at competitive and affordable prices. The project resulted into production and distribution of over 360 tons of Potato, and benefited 600 individuals of farmers and their families.
This amounted to $131,166 and came under Beyaz Eller’s Food Security and Livelihood Program that that aims at alleviating humanitarian suffering, preserving human dignity and enabling sustainable livelihood.
